Camdeboo National Park is about two hours from Mountain Zebra National Park. Camdeboo is a small game park near the city of Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo. The main reason for visiting this game park is not the game itself but the wonderful view on the Valley of Desolation. After a steep climb on a winding mountain road you are rewarded by an amazing view on sheer cliffs that rise 120 meter above the valley. This is the product of volcanic and erosive forces of nature for more than 100 million years. You also have a lovely view of the city of Graaff-Reinet and the Karoo. It does have to be sunny to see all this though 🙂

The park is all around us

The historical city of Graaff-Reinet is surrounded by the Camdeboo National Park. It consists of three parts which are divided by a highway. You can stay in the park if you want to, either in a cabin or you could pitch your (rooftop) tent. All accommodation is situated along the edge of a large lake (which you can’t really see while camping). To get to the Valley of Desolation from the campsite you either take the route through the park (and spot some small game) or drive through town since the Valley of Desolation is in a different area.

Valley of DesolationA lot of patience…

Like said before it comes in handy when it’s sunny. We arrived in the afternoon while it started to drizzle and big clouds were forming above the mountain. The higher up we got the worse it got. When we reached the top we were literally ‘in the clouds’ and after waiting for about an hour or so we were sure we wouldn’t see any sun anymore that day. Better luck next time…

The next morning we waited and waited until this overcast day would turn into something a bit more sunny. With little hope we headed to the Valley of Desolation again. Around noon the clouds finally disappeared and we finally got to see the stunning views that the lookout point offers. We thought it was definitely worth the wait but you can decide for yourself:
